Scotland
George Burley is the third Scottish manager in as many years but he has inherited a squad with great spirit and determination. Having come close to making the finals in both 2002 and 2006, Scotland wil be extra determined to get to South Africa this time and they have been drawn in a European Qualifying Group 9 where they may well have every chance. After an unfortunate start to the qualifying phase, where they lost by a goal to nil against Macedonia, they bounced back with a great win against iceland and sit mid table with a home game against Norway to come next.
Holland are the obvious danger in the Group and are favourites in the 2010 World Cup betting to win through but Scotland will grow in confidence especially if they can secure three points against Norway.
Scotland have reached the finals on eight previous occasions, but have only recorded four wins in 23 matches played and have yet to get past the group. Unfortunately after having had a tremendous ‘purple patch’ from 1974 – 1990, where they reached the finals evey year, they have not managed to do so since.
Scotland are 6/1 to win theri qualifying Group, which are quite reasonable odds if they can win at least one of their two matches against Holland. Unfortunately the bookmakers are taking no chances about them finishing in the top two from the Group and make them 6/19 odds on to do so. They are 11/10 to win against Norway this week.
