Groups are then created with each group featuring one team randomly selected from each pot. The World Cup venues for each group are also selected at this stage. The host team, Brazil will play their group matches in the capital city, and will automatically be placed into Pot A in the draw. The groups are decided on a round robin basis with each team from a group, playing each other once, to determine who will qualify for the knock out phases. The top two from each will qualify for the round of sixteen.

If two teams are tied on points, then the winner of their head-to-head match in the group will decide the winner. If that still fails, then the winner will be decided on goal difference and then goals scored. If two teams cannot be separated in any way, then they will play off.

In the last sixteen, each group winner will play a group runner-up on a knock out basis. If two teams draw, them extra time will be played and if still level, a penalty shoot-out will ensue. The same format applies in the last eight, the last four and the final itself.
