England World Cup 2010

England 1996 WinnersEngland are probably the big underachievers of World football. With such a strong domestic game one would think that they would have won the World Cup more than once, which came way back in 1966 World Cup on home soil. They have not reached the Final since with their best performance back in 1990 when they were knocked out by Germany in the semi-finals.

Many punters believed that 2010 would finally be England's year but they once again crumbled under the pressure and were humuliated by Germany in the second round.

1966 Winners

The 1966 World Cup is one that all English people would like to reminisce over and the credit of this success should go down to Sir Alf Ramsey who put together a team that played for each other and led on the field by Bobby Moore and everyone will remember the final at Wembley where they won 4-2 after extra time with Geoff Hurst scoring a hat trick.

Life after Fabio Capello

Fabio CapelloEngland always go into the finals with a realistic chance of winning but always end up falling way short of expectations. Fabio Capello was unable to transform England into World beaters in 2010 despite a successful qualification process. The Italian will step down after Euro 2012, which means England will play under a new manager at the 2014 World Cup.

Current Form

England gained automatic qualification for Euro 2012 after finishing top of their group. However, they were unable to beat Montenegro either home and away which has done little to restore belief in the national side. However, recent friendly wins against Spain and Sweden have gradually built confidence and England will now be looking forward to the Group Stage draw. The Three Lions will also be reasonably happy with their World Cup 2014 Qualification Group H as they have avoided many of the big guns. At present they are seventh in the FIFA World Rankings.
