Italy 1- France1 (aet) Italy won 5-3 on Penalties
For only the second time, the World Cup Final of 2006 was decided on penalties, with Italy taking the Trophy 5-3 on penalties following a match that will go down as one of the most controversial in history
After extra time the two teams were locked at 1-1, with Zidane scoring a penalty for France in the 7th minute. His goal was equalized by Marco Materazzi who scored following a corner in the 19th minute. This score was to stay like that until extra time was completed.
Sadly however the match did not live up to expectation and it will be remembered more for the infamous head butting incident that got French star player and world cup legend, Zinedine Zidane sent off as the match neared extra time. For inexplicable and inexcusable reasons, Zidane, who had never been known for his indiscipline head butted Italian defender, Materazzi in the chest and was immediately sent off the field to the astonishment of a huge worldwide audience.
In the event it mattered not as Italy won the ensuing penalty shoot out with all five of their players scoring while French striker, Daniel Trezuguet missed.
