Fifa World Cup 1966 Final - England v West Germany
The final in 1966 is probably the most played piece of tape ever and especially the controversial extra time goal by Geoff Hurst where to this day it is not clear if that ball crossed the line.
Wembley is always a great venue for a final but no one expected what was to happen on that afternoon in 1966. The whole nation was glued to their TV sets as England took the field against their arch rivals West Germany.
It did not start well for the English as in the 12th minute Helmut Haller scored to put England behind for the first time in the tournament. England did not have to wait long to get on terms as Geoff Hurst equalised six minutes later to score what was to be a hat trick which was his great football achievement and never to be forgotten by the British public. His west Ham team mate Martin Peters put England ahead with 12 minutes remaining. With the crowed counting down the last minutes West Germany got an equaliser through Wolfgang Weber in the 89th minute.
In the 11th minute of extra time, Hurst scored perhaps that goal as his shot hit the underside of the crossbar and bounced down and then out but did the ball cross the line that was the question on everyone's minds but the goal stood and England led once again.
Then to make sure and put things beyond the West Germans, England broke away and Geoff Hurst scored his hat trick. That was the end of the match and England had finally done it.
