1962 Final

Fifa World Cup Final 1962 - Brazil v Czechoslovakia

A very bad tempered tournament meant that one of the Brazil stars had to get the all clear to appear in the final having received a red card in the qualifying games.

More than 70,000 turned up for the final and Masopust put Czechoslovakia into a 15 minute lead after racing on to a long pass from Scherer. This was not a good omen as four of the six previous World Cup winners had fallen behind. Also when Czechoslovakia was last in the final, against Italy in 1934, they opened the scoring and also lost.

Brazil were not behind for very long and two minutes later Amarildo beat the outstanding Schrojf with a great shot. Brazil took the lead for the first time in the 68th minute, when Zito made his own goal heading home an Amarildo centre. With 13 minutes to go the Czechs took a body blow when their normally dependable goalkeeper fumbled a lob into the penalty area from Djalma Santos. Vava was on the spot to put the ball into the net.

Brazil never looked back and took this gift and came out comfortable winners and Mauro went up to collect the Jules Rimet Trophy as Brazil joined Uruguay and Italy as two-times winners.
