Fifa World Cup Final 1930 - Uruguay v Argentina
The first ever world Cup final was played in the newly built stadium only finished 5 days in the finals itself due to heavy rain. Hosts Uruguay played Argentina in final.
In an ebb and flowing game the hosts went ahead when Pablo Dorado shot through the legs of goalkeeper Botasso. The equalizer came eight minutes later, when Carlos Peucelle picked up a pass from Varallo and beat goalkeeper Ballesteros with a great shot.
Argentina then went ahead in the 37th minute after Stabile scored which looked offside but despite appeals to the referee, Langenus would not change his mind and the goal stood.
In the second half Uruguay got back into the game when Pedro Cea scored after 57 minutes. It was then anyone's game for the taking but the home team scored in the 68th minute when Santos Iriarte scored a cracking goal from more than 25 yards. This was a great goal to showcase the first World Cup final.
Top scorer Stábile came close when hitting the crossbar a few minutes later but the hosts put the result beyond doubt in the very last minute by Castro, who headed home a Dorado cross.
